The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) is proud to mark Black History Month this October, sharing some of the Orchestra’s recent and memorable projects via a series of posts on our social media channels. Black History Month encourages us to reflect on the enormous contribution that Black artists and composers have made to the world of music, whilst acknowledging that these contributions have not received the exposure and recognition that they deserve. The RPO is working towards showcasing and supporting more black musicians in future, as part of its wider inclusion and diversity strategy.

The RPO Spotlight Series at Cadogan Hall this autumn shines a light on not only the musicians on stage but also on the featured composers and their music. Amongst these, we are delighted to give debut performances for the RPO of works by Valerie Coleman (Umoja, 14 Oct) and George Walker (Lyric for Strings, 11 Nov) and we will profile these composers in the build-up to concerts and enjoy listening to these inventive and moving works.

Also this month, across our social media channels, we will be sharing unforgettable projects that the RPO has undertaken with celebrated Black artists. From performing the premiere and recording Shirley Thompson OBE’s New Nation Rising, A 21st Century Symphony, commissioned for HM The Queen’s Golden Jubilee, RPO Resound community and education projects and to symphonic albums with Reggae star John Holt (RPCO) and soul legend Aretha Franklin.
