Live Q&A at 3.30pm with RPO musicians to be announced soon.
Music Director Designate Vasily Petrenko takes the helm for this specially recorded performance of Shostakovich’s exquisite Chamber Symphony, Op.73a. Filmed in London behind closed doors and in compliance with social distancing guidance, the musicians of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra truly shine in this animated masterpiece.
The Chamber Symphony was originally composed in 1946 as String Quartet No.3, and was brilliantly orchestrated by Shostakovich’s close friend, conductor Rudolf Barshai. Cast in five movements, the Symphony delights with its broad range of expression, from playful exuberance to heartfelt melodies, with a range of soloistic magic, intense dialogues and thrilling ensemble playing, all keeping the listener on the edge of their seat.
Recorded on 28 November 2020, Henry Wood Hall, London, UK.
This premiere will be preceded by a live chat Q&A at 3:30 pm with these RPO musicians: Violinist Elen Rideal, cellist Jonathan Ayling and oboist John Roberts.
Here's a one minute preview of what to expect from this premiere.
