Spotlight Series at Home with Barry Wordsworth
BEETHOVEN Coriolan Overture
MENDELSSOHN Violin Concerto
BRITTEN Plymouth Town
Barry Wordsworth Conductor
Chloë Hanslip Violin
Principal Guest Conductor of The Royal Ballet Barry Wordsworth and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra bring orchestral favourites to your screen in a new streaming concert from London’s Cadogan Hall. Opening with Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture, this vivid interpretation of the Roman legend of Coriolanus is filled with drama and tragedy.
Mendelssohn’s electrifying Violin Concerto with the ‘passionate, eloquent’ (The Independent) soloist Chloë Hanslip is followed by Britten’s music for ballet, Plymouth Town. Written when the composer was only 17 years old, this piece is filled with a youthful imagination and spontaneity in weaving the story of a young sailor who alights on the shores of Plymouth. The musical journey is marked by vigorous brass and percussion, a melancholic solo melody in the viola and a boisterous sea shanty, completing a brilliantly colourful and rarely-heard piece by one of Britain’s greatest composers.
