Elgar Enigma Variations
Jamie Phillips Conductor
Irène Duval Violin
An enduring favourite with concert audiences, each movement in Elgar’s Enigma Variations is dedicated to a friend of the great British composer. Listen out for chattering strings, stammering woodwinds and musical laughter, plus the stirring Nimrod. Conductor Jamie Phillips’ ‘dynamic presence on the podium’ (Bachtrack) makes him perfectly suited to this captivating programme of great orchestral works, which also features popular works by Grieg and Delius.
Violinist Irène Duval has been praised for her ‘her mastery of phrasing and of the dramatic dimension’ (Diapason). She makes her debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to perform Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, a piece that is full of sweeping melodies, sparkling virtuosity and concludes with a jubilant finale.
This concert is part of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s 75th Anniversary Season. Passion, versatility and uncompromising artistic standards, as well as a belief that music is a gift that can bring people together and inspire positive change, have been RPO hallmarks for the past 75 years.
