Mendelssohn A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Overture
Beethoven Piano Concerto No.4
Elgar Enigma Variations
Adam Hickox Conductor
Shunta Morimoto Piano (Winner of the Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition 2022)
Tonight’s concert opens with Mendelssohn’s magical Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, followed by a performance by accomplished pianist Shunta Morimoto – winner of the prestigious Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition.
Beethoven’s five piano concertos chart the composer’s dramatic career: from young composer-performer, to his painful descent into deafness and the cruel end of his performing career. Each concerto is, in itself, a sublime masterpiece; his Fourth is no exception.
A timeless bastion of English Romanticism, Elgar’s set of musical dedications to his friends is widely regarded as one of the greatest orchestral works of the twentieth century. The mysterious main theme – the ‘Enigma’ – remains hidden amongst the characterful set of variations, which include the rousing Nimrod, and continues to intrigue audiences to this day.
